Over the past 60 years, the production of plastics has grown in many ways due to their low price, versatility, durability and light weight. These properties have increased the demand for plastic materials and will continue to grow in the coming years. However, as the production of plastic materials increases, the increase in plastic material waste presents many challenges and opportunities for the waste management industry. This overview highlights the waste management and pollution challenges and highlights the various chemicals (known as 'additives') contained in all plastic products that are used to enhance the properties and extend the life of polymers.
